The International Center for English

Description

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at TICE offers comprehensive English language instruction to students with limited English proficiency that prepares them for graduate and undergraduate studies at Arkansas State University (ASU).  Our program includes over 20 hours of study in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, oral communication, and vocabulary development. With six levels ranging from Zero-Beginner to Advanced, our ESL program meets the challenges of students' learning needs from those who have no experience learning English to advanced learners who need to polish their skills before entering a university. Activities and lessons in language skills, American culture, and college preparatory skills (critical thinking, essay and research writing, note taking, presentations, and group work) quickly advance students to the level of knowledge and understanding needed to be successful in their college career. Students may enter the university after completing the final level of the ESL program or by earning a score of 500 or higher on the institutional TOEFL exam (for undergraduate students or 550 for graduate students) given four times each semester. Students who meet either of these qualifications may enter ASU with no further need of English proficiency test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Location

The ESL program of TICE is located on the campus of Arkansas State University (ASU) in Jonesboro, AR.  Jonesboro is Arkansas' fastest growing city with a population of over 57,000 and holds nearly every convenience of a big city and every comfort of a small town. It is the fifth largest city in Arkansas and the regional center for manufacturing, agriculture, medicine, education and trade. The city of Jonesboro offers museums and art galleries, various performances hosted by ASU's Convocation Center, movie theaters, shopping malls with major department stores and individual stores, and many international and American restaurants.  A wide variety of first rate health care facilities including two full-scale hospitals are located close to ASU's campus.

Jonesboro is only one hours drive away from Memphis and its international airport.  Little Rock, St. Louis, Nashville, Huntsville, and Jackson are within easy driving distance.
