English Language Program

Description

For more information, please contact this program directly or visit the website of the English Language Program http://www.vcu.edu/oie/elp/index.html

The English Language Program (ELP) is part of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), a large, public American research university with two main campuses located in downtown Richmond, Virginia.  VCU is an urban univesity with one of the largest enrollments in the state; having over 32,000 students.

The English Language Program provides English language support to students who are academically admissible to VCU but in need of improved English skills and proficiency, thus enabling them to be more competitive in a classroom environment. The ELP also serves individuals who want to improve their English language skills for career and personal reasons.  The ELP is unique in that it accepts absolute beginners and has a strong language proficiency program that also focuses on critical thinking skills that are necessary for success in an American academic program.

Location

The ELP is located in Richmond, the capital city of the state of Virginia.  It combines the excitement and opportunity of a large urban and international business center with the traditions of a historic and residential area. Centrally located, the city is close to Washington, D.C., the U.S. capital, Virginia Beach and the Atlantic Ocean, and the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. Richmond’s location offers the opportunity to visit many other sites of interest — within the city and beyond.

Teaching Qualifications

The English Language Program staffs instructors with diverse backgrounds and experiences relating to multiculturalism.  Most ELP instructors have MAs in TESOL or related fields.
